This book not only celebrates
the year - 1985 - the 150th anniversary of the founding of Woodhaven by
John R. Pitkin but also gives in great detail the story of Woodhaven and
Ozone Park.
John Schlight's
book on his boyhood in Woodhaven not only chronicles his many memories
of growing up during the 1920's -1940's in Woodhaven but manages to
create a special snapshot of that time in Woodhaven.
Today not too many people remember
Dexter Park, but in the first half of the twentieth century, Dexter Park
played host to many of the top baseball stars of the majors and Negro
Leagues right here in Woodhaven.
Dexter Park
was not only a glorified baseball field but became a symbol mirroring
social changes in the uniquely localized communities of NYC. Baseball
was the medium.
The Cypress Hills Cemetery
was created as a result of the Rural Cemetery Association Act of 1847;
the first cemetery organized in the New York area under this act.
The Southside Burial Ground
in Ozone Park was laid out about 1680. It was established on the Van Wicklen
farm and burials continued there until 1919.
This fascinating book is compiled
by Dorothea & June McCowan which gives the history of these early
settlers of Woodhaven and their family cemetery which has been restored
and is now protected and preserved.
William F. Krooss' book on
the history of Richmond Hill starts from the earliest Indian settlers
to the present day community of Richmond Hill
